Bothe-Napa Valley State Park

"Napa Valley needs not the services of the poet. It sings its own praises and speaks for itself. Here, nature has been so lavish in her gifts, that man can add nothing to heighten the charms nor enhance the worth of this veritable eden."
-- Martha Hitchcock Bothe-Napa Valley State Park (say "BOW-thay"), between St. Helena and Calistoga in the Napa Valley, is a site steeped in history. Horseback trails run along Ritchey Creek, which flows year-round through a shady redwood and Douglas fir forest. This was the home, for thousands of years, of the Wappo tribe of California; later site of a fashionable summer home for San Francisco socialites and a campground run by Reinhold Bothe. This beautiful place became a state park in 1960, making a serene stop for locals and tourist alike. Bothe-Napa Valley State Park is only a 15 minute drive from either St. Helena or Calistoga, in the heart of the world famous wine producing region of Napa Valley. The park offers a swimming pool, picnic area, camping and a Native American Garden which displays some of the plants important to the first people of this area. |
